Alcatraz, as both a symbol and an institution, creates an aura and subliminal imagery that evoke a formidable sense of isolation, while also suggesting strength, gloom, reform, and recovery. Just as swimmers pass by with tenacity and ease, moving through the waters that engulf the tiny rock, there is a certainty that the waters of life are everywhere and will, in time, erode even the rocks of Alcatraz. Sometimes all one has to do is find the willingness to embrace the cold front—the initial shock of getting their feet wet—when beginning again.
